Documenting USA Citizenship for Adoptees

Image
Is your adopted child a citizen? Can you prove it? Can your adult child prove it when you are gone? (Adoptees - read this and replace “your child” with “you”). In order to have citizenship on record with each of these agencies, you must have 3 things: a Certificate of Citizenship or Certificate of Naturalization (for USCIS), a US Passport (for DoS), and a proof of citizenship status update at Social Security Administration or using a proof of citizenship document (the CoC/CoN or Passport) simply having a SS number is not enough. Non-US citizens also have SSN in order to work and pay taxes. This could be vitally important to your child in the future, especially if they are ever arrested (and it does happen) even for something very minor. There are many examples for instance see: http://fpif.org/deporting_adult_adoptees/ Deportations of Adoptees began due to amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) which were contained in the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immi...

Getting Immigration Documents (the packet that was hand carried to the Immigration Office upon arrival in USA)

Image
Often Adoptive Parents or Adoptees want to review the documents in the immigration packet that was hand carried through immigration when you arrived in the USA. Here are the forms you need. Request for Originals G-884  https://www.uscis.gov/g-884 You will get originals of anything USCIS has originals of  (possibly Birth Ceritifcate, Adoption Decree, decree terminating bio parent rights/death certificates, etc.). You will need the “ A number ”, which should will be in the first country passport that was used for immigration into USA. It is also on Certificate to Citizenship as INS or USCIS Registration Number FOIA request G-639 https://www.uscis.gov/g-639 This provides a photocopy of everything. It will have more forms. The G-884 provides the original documents (but not everything will have an "original"), the G-639 provides scans of all documents. I recommend both forms.

Am I Ready to be an Adoptive Parent?

Image
I believe that well prepared, fully - informed  families, appropriately matched, with children who truly are in need of a family (and who want to be adopted) , have the best chance of success for all parties.  Adoptive families, especially those adopting teens, need to be able to parent outside the box, be able to adapt, and be able to discard prior beliefs, dreams, and plans. Find your new dreams, Make your new plans, and Love your new life,

------------ All children are a joy~~ All children deserve the love of a family. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol1LvzVCyxE Children grow best in a family. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EA4lMsprxUs It is in a family that children will bloom.
